Fort Liberty troops head to Middle East

Every year, the 6,000 people who live adjacent to the Port of Wilmington, in New Hanover County, are assaulted with hundreds of tons of air pollution: from the concrete plants spewing ultrafine dust, the fumigation facilities legally emitting neurotoxins like methyl bromide and phosphine, the ships and trains and tractor-trailers exhaling plumes of diesel fumes.

School district receives technology innovation award

Cumberland County Schools has been named a “District of Distinction” by zSpace — a company that creates virtual and augmented reality-based educational programs and technology — for its achievements in integrating AR/VR technology into high school and middle school classrooms across the district. 

One-stop early voting for the Nov. 7 municipal elections is underway at two locations in Cumberland County. Voters will be required to show photo identification at the polls, according to a Board of Elections news release. Residents who do not have a photo ID can get a free one at the Board of Elections Office.

Local Government Commission praises Spring Lake for fiscal stewardship

Spring Lake board to set road closure for Veterans Day, mural unveiling

Spring Lake’s Board of Aldermen is expected on Monday to pass an ordinance declaring a road closure for the town’s Veterans Day ceremony. The board meets at 6 p.m. in the Grady Howard Conference Room of the Spring Lake municipal complex.

Pine Forest women’s golf standout balances volleyball, classroom achievements

Pine Forest women’s golf coach David May said he was talking to a cohort recently when the subject of Trojan senior golfer Jordan Blanton came up. “Jordan is playing with a different mantra,” May said. “She’s calm and collected. Her whole game is changing.” After a string of scores in the 80s, Blanton peaked earlier this week in the All American Conference tournament at Chicora Golf Club in Dunn, turning in a personal best of 77.

Cumberland schools well represented on East’s All-Star football squad

There will be a strong Cumberland County presence at the first East-West All-Star football game played in December this year. Two Fayetteville coaches are on the East staff for the game. Pine Forest’s Bill Sochovka will be head coach for the East while Terry Sanford assistant coach Jeff Morehead will be an assistant. Players from Cumberland County chosen for the game include kicker Juan Hernandez of Pine Forest, wide receiver Rico McDonald and linebacker Landon Sargent of Cape Fear, and defensive back Kamal Thames of Terry Sanford.

Fayetteville Academy looks to prove itself in soccer playoffs

A funny thing happened to Fayetteville Academy after completing its soccer regular season with a perfect 16-0 record. When seedings were announced for this year’s state 2-A playoffs, the Eagles found themselves sitting at No. 6. The lower seeding did earn them a double bye, meaning they won’t play their first game until Saturday, but both Eagle head coach Andrew McCarthy and some of his players were a little mystified that they didn’t get more of a reward for their unbeaten record.

A loaded gun was found in a student’s locker at Gray’s Creek High School on Tuesday, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. 

  Oct. 18 is the anniversary of the day in 2006 when I met Lt. Col. Justin Constantine. And it’s also his “Alive Day” — a day marked annually by some who survive a close brush with death, especially if it happened in combat. Animal shelter, county seek funding to pay for seized horses’ care

It’s been nearly two months since Cumberland County Animal Services removed seven horses — two adults and five juveniles — from Witts End Quarter Horses, resulting in arrests and charges of animal abuse. 

GRAY’S CREEK – Slip the notch in your belt down by one. No need for a snug-fitting skirt. Those country cooks from “down at the branch” are busy this week preparing for the 56th annual Gray’s Creek Woman’s Club Buffet and Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the newly remodeled Gray’s Creek Community Building.
