SPRING LAKE — A public hearing is scheduled Monday on a plan to build apartments on Main Street that is drawing criticism from some town officials.

“It doesn’t matter how hard things get,” said Lucas Simmons, a sixth-grader at South View Middle School. “I’ve got to keep on going and not stop no matter how tough things are.” Lucas’ sentiment echoes that of hundreds of Cumberland County Schools students and parents who had the chance to hear former NFL player Keith Davis and former college football player Germard Reed during a two-day visit to local middle schools.

SPRING LAKE — Revenue is on track and expenditures are being closely monitored, according to a financial report presented to the Spring Lake Board of Aldermen on Monday. David Erwin, the town’s finance officer and accounting and financial management adviser for the N.C. Department of the State Treasurer, said that property tax revenue is the “cash high of the year.”

SPRING LAKE — The Spring Lake Board of Aldermen will hear a financial report presented by the N.C. Local Government Commission at its work session Monday night. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Grady Howard Conference Toom of the municipal complex.

A Spring Lake man has been arrested and charged with murder in the September death of a man on Belhaven Road in Fayetteville. Jamal Robinson, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jermaine Hailey on Sept. 26, the release said.

SPRING LAKE — The Spring Lake Board of Aldermen considered the difference between contracted positions and town-eliminated positions at its meeting on Monday night. Human Resources Director Terry Hock said seven positions that were cut include a code enforcement officer, inspections supervisor, fire battalion chief, police lieutenant, meter reader, finance director and accounts payable clerk.

SPRING LAKE — The Spring Lake Board of Aldermen is expected to discuss jobs that have been eliminated when it meets Monday night. The board will meet in the Grady Howard Conference Room at Town Hall at 6 p.m. Monday.

By a 3-2 vote Monday night, the Spring Lake Board of Aldermen adopted an extension agreement among Cumberland County municipalities to delay implementation of a sales tax distribution method for a sales tax distribution method for a year.
