Augustine “Gus” Vendetti, 83, of Lumber Bridge, NC passed away on Sunday, November 26th, 2023.
Gus Vendetti was born October the 4th, 1940 in Townline, NY to two devout Catholic, Italian American parents with seven siblings. He attended Alden High and enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17 as an Infantryman. He served three tours in Vietnam, his first tour was as an enlisted Soldier, second as a Lieutenant and third as a helicopter pilot. He was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, the Silver Star, 5 Bronze Stars with V device, and 3 Purple Hearts among numerous other awards. Although his greatest achievement was being a servant leader to his soldiers of the 173rd ABN BDE, also known as the “Sky Soldiers.” Gus retired from the Army in 1978 with the rank of Major. He recognized the absence of a military program at Purnell Swett High School. Upon retirement, he began his second career as a JROTC Instructor, a job which he created himself. He made arguably his biggest impact on the US Military, commissioning, and enlisting hundreds of soldiers into the various branches of service. In this time, he also created the JROTC Insignia Pins that high schools and colleges still use today. Gus proudly retired from teaching in 2004 after 25 years. He settled down at his farm in Lumber Bridge, NC where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and planting his seasonal crops.
