Methodist University named among 10 'must-watch' universities
Higher Education Digest named Methodist University as one of 10 “must-watch” North American colleges and universities in 2022.
Methodist was the only university in North Carolina on the magazine’s list, which featured Oklahoma State, San Diego State, and three other U.S. schools, according to a Methodist news release.
“MU is honored to be featured on this well-respected list,” said Minnu Paul, director of Methodist’s Global Education Office. “Our university is constantly working to create an experience that engages, enriches and empowers our students’ lives. … This ranking solidifies the fact that we are a globalized campus.”
The magazine’s writers noted Methodist’s “thriving city atmosphere,” its ranking as the No. 1 most diverse university in North Carolina, the more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs, and the top 16% ranking nationally by The New York Times for overall economic mobility, the release said.
The Higher Education Digest report noted that Methodist enrolls students from more than 50 countries and six continents.
“Plus, non-international staff and people in the Fayetteville community are welcoming and supportive of international students,” Paul said in the news release. “They donate in kind, monetarily, they pick up students from the airport, and they provide a home away from home in various ways.”

9 Fayetteville Tech faculty members receive awards for innovation
Nine faculty members at Fayetteville Technical Community College have been selected to receive League Excellence Awards from the League for Innovation in the Community College, according to a news release from the college.
The recipients are:
FTCC's associate vice presidents for curriculum programs and corporate and continuing education collaborated to select the faculty members, who were cited for excellence in the classroom through innovative instructional practices and exceptional support to students, the release said.
The award recipients were then approved by FTCC President Mark Sorrells.
“The FTCC family is delighted with your accomplishments and wishes to express appreciation for the hard work and dedication you have contributed to FTCC’s mission of helping students succeed academically and improving social and economic mobility of our students and their families,” Sorrells said in the news release.
According to its website, the League for Innovation in the Community College has been recognizing faculty and staff in the community college field who have made a significant difference in the lives of students and in the communities their colleges serve with Excellence Awards since 2012.
Each recipient is presented a pewter medallion and certificate. Recipients may attend the Innovations Conference scheduled March 11-14 in Tempe, Arizona.

City marketing department adds public information specialist
Devon Smith has joined the city of Fayetteville Marketing and Communication Department as a public information specialist, according to department Director Loren Bymer.
Smith previously worked for the Office of Marketing and Communications at Elon University as the communications specialist for inclusive excellence. He has more than 12 years of education and experience in communications and multimedia production, including five years with the city of Greensboro, Bymer said in an email.
Smith was raised in Fayetteville and graduated from Douglas Byrd High School in 2010.
