Small business assistance program deadline is March 31

Small businesses that experienced economic hardship due to the pandemic may be eligible for financial help through Cumberland County’s Small Business Economic Assistance Program. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. March 31.

The program will be funded under the American Rescue Plan Act.

As of March 14, the county’s American Rescue Plan Committee said 110 applications had been submitted to the program requesting more than $5.4 million in funding. The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners originally allocated $3.5 million for the program.

The application is available online at cumberlandcountync.gov/ARP under the Small Business tab. 

Cooperative Extension accepting Agricultural Hall of Fame nominations

The Cumberland County Cooperative Extension is accepting nominations for the 2022 Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame.

The Agricultural Hall of Fame honors county residents who have made significant contributions to agriculture, home economics, youth development or rural communities. 

Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. June 30. Nomination forms are available on the Cooperative Extension website at cumberland.ces.ncsu.edu or by calling 910-321-6405.

Completed nomination forms, with the supporting documentation, should not exceed five pages.

Nominations may be mailed to Cumberland County Cooperative Extension, Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center, 301 East Mountain Drive, Fayetteville, N.C. 28306. They also may be faxed to 910-321-6883 or emailed to Cooperative Extension Director Lisa Childers at lisa_childers@ncsu.edu.

The recipient will be honored in November during the annual Farm-City Week Celebration.

Nominations being accepted for chamber awards

Nominations are being accepted for the Greater Fayetteville Chamber’s 2022 annual awards.

Each year the chamber recognizes the Business of the Year, the Athena Award and the Small Business of the Year. The deadline to submit a nomination is March 31 at 5 p.m.

The Business of the Year recognizes someone who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the growth of their employees, demonstrated innovation and creativity among their peers and overcome challenges.

The Athena Award recognizes someone who has demonstrated the greatest support for the goals of professional women.

The Small Business of the Year recognizes influencers who stand out within the small business market.

Nominations may be submitted through this google form.

Summer vegetable gardening workshop

Learn tips about growing vegetables in a home garden during a workshop scheduled for April 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The Cumberland County Cooperative Extension is hosting the workshop, “Summer Vegetable Gardening 101.” It will be held in person at the Agricultural Extension Auditorium, 301 E. Mountain Drive, a release said.

The workshop is geared toward all levels of gardeners, whether a seasoned pro or a beginner. Participants will receive a vegetable garden starter kit. Registration and the $10 fee are due by noon April 4.
