Conrad E. Lopes, 68 of Fayetteville, NC passed away Thursday, November 24th, 2022.

Conrad was born January 7, 1954, in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to the late Conrad Charles and Betty Bernice Lopes. He attended Pine Forest High School class of 1972. Conrad enjoyed life and always strived for excellence. He was on the football team, baseball team, track team and was the FBLA President. He loved life and he loved people. Conrad received his Bachelor’s Degree at Pembroke University where he was chess champion 1972-73 and 1974-75. It was there that he met Karen Lopes, who would become his wife of 46 years. He earned his Master’s Degree at Fayetteville State University in 1991.

Conrad began his career as a teacher/coach at Massey Hill Junior High. In 1991, he became an Assistant Principal at Hillcrest Middle School. Five years later he earned a position as Principal at 71st High School. One of the highlights of Conrad’s career was the opportunity to open Jack Britt High School as the first principal. After his retirement he went to Charleston, SC where he was Principal at Stratford High School in Goose Creek, SC. When he returned home to Fayetteville Conrad returned to CCS and worked with other principals, filling in for them when he was needed. He did this up until he became ill in October of 2021. In 2006, Conrad was principal of the year for Cumberland County and in 2012 principal of the year in Berkeley County. Conrad’s passion was to provide students with a safe learning environment in a school where they could enjoy life as much as he did.

Conrad was preceded in death by his Father, Conrad Charles Lopes; his mother, Betty Lopes Edge; his step Father, Alex Eskel Edge; his father in law, James Franklin Burnette. He is survived by his wife, Karen Burnette Lopes; daughter, Sylvia Lopes Thornton and husband, Adam of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Aiden Thornton, Aubrey Thornton and Isla Thornton; sisters, Deborah Lopes, Vivian Ivers (Jim), Marla Hester (Jim), and Beverly Gail Vigna (Alfred); mother in law, Gail Burnette; and his siblings in law, James Burnette, Scott Burnette, Sandra Burnette, and Julian Burnette (Tammi).

A visitation will be held at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 30th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A private family service will be held at a later date.
