Cumberland County departments giving out N95 masks

Posted

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the county library system has run out of masks.

Residents who need N95 masks will be able to get them from several Cumberland County departments while supplies last.

The departments include the Cumberland County Department of Public Health and Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation.

Cumberland County libraries had masks Wednesday, but they distributed their  4,000 allotment in one day, a county spokesman said Thursday.

The Health Department, at 1225 Ramsey St., still has masks. Five N95 masks will be distributed per person in each household, the release said.

The masks were provided by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Approximately 25,000 additional masks have been provided to other groups throughout Cumberland County for distribution. They include 8,000 for Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation locations and 1,000 masks each for the Spring Lake and Hope Mills recreations sites, the county said in a news release.

Parks & Recreation will start distributing their masks Friday, the spokesman said.

“Layering levels of protection continues to be important as the especially contagious Omicron variant continues to spread,” Dr. Jennifer Green, the Cumberland County health director, said in the release. “Wearing a high-quality mask indoors, such as an N95, getting vaccinated, and boosted when eligible will help to slow community spread.”

When it fits well and is worn consistently, an N95 offers the highest level of protection against the spread of COVID-19 compared with other masks, the release said.

Cumberland County’s COVID-19 positive test rate was at 40.5% as of Monday, the release said. The statewide average positive rate is 34.3%. The Health Department said 6,051 positive COVID-19 cases have been reported in the last seven days.

There have been 66,734 cases and 513 deaths in Cumberland County since the onset of the pandemic, the Health Department said.
