A deputy was injured Sunday while trying to make an arrest on a probation violation, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy P. Hernandez was trying to arrest 32-year-old Jeffery Kyle Pomeroy of Fayetteville at the Coliseum Inn on Gillespie Street, a release said. Pomeroy had an outstanding warrant for a probation violation, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When Hernandez tried to detain Pomeroy, a struggle ensued and Pomeroy broke free, causing injury to the deputy’s legs, the Sheriff’s Office said. Hernandez was taken to the hospital for his injuries, the release said.

The Sheriff’s Office said the Fayetteville Police Department caught Pomeroy as he was fleeing the scene.

Pomeroy was arrested and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting physical injury,  resist, delay and obstruct, and parole violation, the release said. He is in the Cumberland County Detention Center with no bond.
