Deadline is Jan. 5 to pay real estate, property taxes in Cumberland County

Cumberland County residents have until Jan. 5, 2023, to pay taxes on real estate and personal p operty that they listed in January 2022, according to the county Tax Administration office.

Interest and enforced collections — such as a bank levy, wage or rent garnishment, and/or foreclosure — will begin on Jan. 6. Interest and collection fees will be added to the tax amount due, according to the tax office’s website.

County government offices and the courthouse will be closed through Dec. 27 for the Christmas holiday. Offices will again be closed on Jan. 2 for the New Year’s holiday.

The last week of the year is typically busy for the tax office as taxpayers seek to pay taxes by Dec. 31 for 2022 income tax filing purposes, the tax office says.

Tax bills can be made in person, online, by mail or by phone. Go to cumberlandcountync.gov/tax to pay online with an electronic check, debit card or major credit card. A service fee of $3.80 will apply to all payments processed using a Visa or Mastercard debit card. Taxpayers using other debit and credit cards will be charged a fee of 2.5% of the amount paid or a minimum of $2, whichever is greater. Business cards, purchasing cards, American Express or other High Rewards cards will be charged a fee of 3.25%.

Taxpayers may pay in person using cash, money orders, check, or debit or credit cards at the Tax Administration office, located in Room 530 on the fifth floor of the Cumberland County Courthouse, 117 Dick St. Payments by check can be made using a drop box outside Room 530 near the customer service entrance of the Tax Administration office.

To pay by phone, call 866-441-6614. The address to pay taxes by mail is Cumberland County Tax Collector, P.O. Box 449, Fayetteville, NC 28302-0449. Mailed payments must be made with a check or money order payable to Cumberland County Tax Collector.                                                                                           

The 2023 annual property tax listing period begins Jan. 1 and runs through Jan. 31. Listing forms must be updated, signed, and returned and must be postmarked no later than Jan. 31 to avoid a 10% late fee.
