Hope Mills board to approve sale of Trade Street museum property

Posted

HOPE MILLS - The town Board of Commissioners on Monday is expected to sign off on the sale of the Trade Street property that had once been planned as a town museum.

It is one of several items on the board’s consent agenda.

The board meets at 7 p.m. in the Luther Board Meeting Room at Town Hall.

During the board’s budget retreat on March 11, commissioners heard an update on the Trade Street property that had been proposed to serve as the town’s history museum. At one time, the idea was to have a place to display artifacts and tell the town’s history as a mill village.

A town building official was asked at the retreat about the building’s occupancy and potential uses, according to background material in the agenda packet.

The house is small and would have an occupancy of less than six, the background material states.

Board members asked if there were other possible uses for the property if it was not used as a museum. Town staff did not offer any other uses, the background material states.

If the building were to be used for office space, it would require extensive IT and other costly upgrades, the background material states.

Monday night’s action would allow the town manager to initiate the sale of the property.

The Johnson Street sidewalk project is also on the consent agenda. The board voted at its budget retreat to stop work on the project.

Also on the consent agenda is consideration of authorizing the town manager to execute agreements related to the 2022 Household Hazardous Waste and Shred event scheduled for May 7.

The Stormwater Department holds the event each year so residents can properly dispose of hazardous waste. Clean Harbors, an environmental company, will provide service pickup from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 7. Stericycle will provide paper shred bins or shred trucks at Public Works beginning May 6 to help the town dispose of excess paper, according to background material in the agenda packet. The staff budgets $30,000 a year for the event and is requesting approval up to this amount.

Residents will receive a mailer with information about the event, and information also will be posted on the town website.

The board also is expected to hold public hearings on two annexation cases.

Public hearings are scheduled for the annexation of Camden Commons - which consists of nearly 83 acres bordered by Rockfish Road, Waldos Beach Road and Camden Road - and Camden Preserve, which consists of nearly 53 acres along the southern portion of Camden Road and north of the existing Valley End II subdivision, according to background information in the agenda packet.
