Hope Mills board to discuss budget priorities

Posted

HOPE MILLS - The Hope Mills Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Monday to discuss budget priorities ahead of the 2022-23 budget preparation.

The special session will serve as a preliminary meeting for the board’s budget retreat scheduled for March and will serve as a refresher for veteran board members and an instructional tool for new Commissioners Grilley Mitchell and Joanne Scarola.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

“We will look at the previous budget so the new board members can get more familiar with the line items,” Mayor Jackie Warner said.

“We’ve found when they come on brand new and (have) never been involved with budgeting, the more information we can give them the more ready they’ll be prepared for the budget retreat,” Warner said.

The Board of Commissioners is expected to compare the Capital Improvement Plans from 2020 and 2021 and talk about priorities for 2022. The discussion is expected to include projects that were funded as well as those that were unfunded.

“We’ll look at those projects and see what we have funds for. We'll prioritize the ones that weren’t funded but maybe now could be funded,” Warner said. “It’s a way of looking at the projects we already have preplanned and let the new board members ask questions of those who have been on the board a while and already been through the process.”

The board also is expected to discuss the role of commissioners and the mayor.

“It's an opportunity for new commissioners to learn what they can and can’t do regarding the planning of the budget for the next term,” Warner said. “It’s a great time to hear what each commissioner would like to see for Hope Mills during the next budget.”
