Chicken Foot Road intersection to become roundabout

Posted

An intersection in southern Cumberland County will be converted from four-way stop signs to a roundabout after the state awarded nearly $2 million for the project on Monday.

The circular intersection will be constructed at Chicken Foot and John McMillan roads to improve safety and traffic flow, according to a release from the N.C.  Department of Transportation.

Fayetteville contractor Highland Paving Co. can begin work in June and will have about one year to complete the project, the release said.

The department changed the intersection to an all-way stop in 2018 as an interim safety measure. The change was the result of an analysis of 10 years of crash data. Nearly all 31 crashes that occurred there in that period were the result of drivers on John McMillian Road who failed to stop or yield to the right of way, the release said.

Roundabouts help reduce congestion and backups associated with traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals, DOT says. A driver generally enters the roundabout more quickly than if waiting at a traffic signal, the release said. Additionally, people travel at slower speeds in a roundabout, improving safety.

Drivers can visit this NCDOT website to learn how easy it is to navigate a roundabout.

A public meeting map  provides a rendering of the roundabout. Because it is outside any municipality, the roundabout will  have street lights installed to improve visibility at night, the release said.

At times during construction, some segments of the roads near this intersection will be closed and traffic detoured. DOT will post the closures at DriveNC.gov, the release said.
