Day Trips: One Hour Away

Something for everyone

Raleigh ‘food hall’ serves a diverse selection to please all palates

Posted

If you enjoy trying new restaurants and different foods, a day trip to Raleigh’s Morgan Street Food Hall will satisfy your appetite.

The food hall, which opened about four years ago, has a rustic industrial look, with plenty of seating both inside and out on the terrace.

Patrons can choose among 18 restaurants that have leased space in an indoor food court that's akin to a shopping-mall food court — but with a different vibe. Everyone in your group can choose the kind of food that suits their individual taste.

Options include Opa! Raleigh Greek food; Curry in a Hurry; Bella’s Wood Fired Pizza & Tapas; YoHo Hibachi and Sushi Burrito; Buena Papa Fry Bar; Wicked Taco; Cousins Maine Lobster; and Bad Cat Coffee, Crepes & Bagels.

Kelsey Mason and her family, who live in Southern Pines, visited her brother in Raleigh in late March and made a return visit to the food hall. It’s at the corner of Morgan and West streets in downtown Raleigh.

The building — which used to house a nightclub and arcade — is near the railroad tracks and within view of the landmark Holiday Inn Raleigh Downtown, which towers in the background.

Mason’s husband, James, is a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg.

“We’re just going to walk around and see what we want to try this time around,” says Kelsey, who was accompanied by her daughters, 9-year-old Avery and 5-year-old Ellie.

Mason once again picked CowBar Burgers & Fries.

“They love our burgers,” says Kenyon Pelzer, 24, the manager of CowBar. “Definitely the truffle burger and truffle fries.”

The food hall is about an 80-minute drive from Fayetteville, making it an ideal day trip. Museums, state government buildings and other places of interest are nearby.

“It’s a nice experience,” says Liza Jackman, a 19-year-old barista at Boba Brew who was eating lunch from the food hall’s Oak City Fish & Chips while awaiting customers. “I feel like it’s a calm and peaceful place to just be with friends, grab some drinks if you want to. You’re downtown. It’s nice here, and there’s so much variety.”
