‘Soul & Spirit’ art exhibit celebrates Black artists at Arts Council through March 4

Posted

An opening reception for “Soul & Spirit: Celebrating Black Joy,” a national juried art exhibition, was scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Arts Council of Fayetteville-Cumberland County.

The exhibit will be on display through March 4 at the Arts Center, 301 Hay St.

The reception and exhibit are free, according to an Arts Council news release.

The reception featured live performances, and curator Dwight Smith will be on hand to answer questions about the featured artwork.

The exhibit is part of the Black Culture Experience series that showcases the artistry and vision of African American artists, the release said. It is sponsored by Ellington-White Contemporary Art Gallery on Gillespie Street, with funding support from the Arts Council.

The “Soul & Spirit” exhibit shares the works of 28 Black artists from across the U.S. Many of them have exhibited in major international museums and have been featured on PBS, “CBS Sunday Morning,” and other national media sources, the release said.

Curator Smith, associate professor of visual arts at Fayetteville State University, and guest jurors Shirley Woodson and Senghor Reid selected the works on display in “Soul & Spirit.”
