The ASOM Shares Heartwarming New Year Story

Posted

Among the many exhibits at the U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum (ASOM), the Battle of the Bulge display is one of the most memorable, especially since this time of year marks the anniversary of the five-week battle. One of the artifacts displayed in the lobby of the ASOM is the card pictured above.

On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched a surprise offensive through the Ardennes Forest in an attempt to capture Antwerp and to drive a wedge between the British and American forces in northern France, thus initiating the Battle of the Bulge.

Defense of the Belgian town of Bastogne was critical to prevent the German troops from advancing. The 101st Airborne Division successfully held the town while Patton's Third Army drove out German forces.

Forrever grateful for this American victory, the card was made by local schoolchildren of the neighboring village of Villers le Tilleul and was presented to the 101st Airborne Division for New Year's Day.

To learn more about the Battle of the Bulge, visit the display located in the ASOM’s Main Gallery. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, and Sunday, 12:00-4:00 PM.

Additionally, visitors can learn more about the roles 82nd and 101st Airborne Soldiers played during WWII by visiting the “D-Day: Freedom from Above” exhibit on display temporarily at the ASOM. This exhibit uses HistoPad, an augmented reality technology in combination with artifacts that once belonged to local WWII veterans to provide an immersive experience for visitors. This exhibit will be on display at the ASOM through June 2022.
