Contractor sought to operate Spring Lake license plate agency

ROCKY MOUNT — The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is seeking a commissioned contractor to operate a license plate agency in Spring Lake.

Although DMV oversees license plate agencies, they are managed by private businesses or local governments. The Spring Lake agency, at 316 N.C. 210 N., will close on Nov. 30 after the current operator’s contract ends. The agency has been operated by Troy Townsend since 2017, according to a DMV news release.

Applications to operate the agency must be sent to DMV no later than July 7. The applications (Form MVR-93 or Form MVR-93AA) can be found on the Connect NCDOT website. Interested applicants may call 919-615-8521 with questions.

License plate agencies provide vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Currently, 127 license plate agencies operate in North Carolina, the release said.

Revised policies on ARP funding approved by committee

The American Rescue Plan Committee of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners has approved a recommendation from county staff to revise the Small Business Economic Assistance Policy in light of a U.S. Treasury decision.

The ruling included modifications with implications for the county’s Small Business Economic Assistance Program, including revised eligibility criteria, updated allocation guidelines, and revised reporting requirements, according to a county news release

The policy revision streamlines program requirements to make them less restrictive on small businesses seeking to apply for assistance.

Along with the policy revision, the committee approved a recommendation to reopen the application period for the Small Business Economic Assistance Program from July 1 to July 31 to allow additional small businesses to apply.

Additionally, the committee approved a request to grant county administrators the authority to amend existing contracts with small businesses for as much as the $50,000 maximum allowed.

The changes will be considered by the full Board of Commissioners meeting on June 19.

The ARP Committee includes Commissioners Jimmy Keefe, Toni Stewart and Glenn Adams.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center receives advanced perinatal certification

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center recently received advanced certification in perinatal care from the Joint Commission, the first hospital in the state to be certified.

The hospital, which delivers about 4,800 babies each year, has held basic certification in perinatal care since 2016.

According to the Joint Commission, the advanced certification helps organizations address the growing need for obstetric care given the challenges of increasing maternal morbidity and mortality in the U.S. The Joint Commission — an independent, nonprofit organization — is the nation's oldest and largest accrediting body in health care.

Cape Fear Valley’s women and children department includes a 15-bed labor and delivery unit, 36 postpartum rooms, and a 44-bed Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
