Metronet names Whitfield director of government affairs
Metronet on Nov. 10 named Telly Whitfield director of government affairs.
Whitfield previously served as assistant city manager for Fayetteville.
“After working with Metronet closely to ensure residents and businesses throughout the city of Fayetteville would have access to their state-of-the-art 100 percent fiber optic network, I am proud to join their team to help ensure that more communities have that same opportunity,” Whitfield said in a release. “I look forward to working alongside this top-notch team that has worked tirelessly to bring service to small and mid-sized cities throughout the country.”
Whitfield has more than 20 years of experience in public service and executive leadership throughout numerous Mid-Atlantic communities with proven results in planning and zoning, economic development, information technology, human services, neighborhood building, community development and more, the release said.
Whitfield has a Ph.D. in public administration and public affairs from Virginia Tech and a bachelor of arts in political science from Hampton University, along with additional graduate study at American University, the release said.
Community H&H stand down information & resource fair set for Friday
United Way of Cumberland County along with the Community Homeless & Hunger Stand Down Committee will host the 2022 Community Stand Down Resource & Information Fair on Friday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at V.F.W. Post 6018 at 116 Chance St.
The event offers a one-stop location for homeless individuals and families or those who are at-risk of being homeless to access services that meet their basic needs.
A free lunch will be provided to those who attend.
There will be COVID 19 vaccinations and testing, flu shots, dental screenings and blood pressure checks. Hygiene kits will be available as will education and employment resources, veteran assistance resources and housing resources.
Free transportation will be provided to and from the event by FAST Transit.

Cumberland County seeks partners for white flag events Cumberland County is seeking information from providers interested in partnering with the county to provide white flag shelters for vulnerable and homeless populations during extreme winter weather situations. A white flag event is defined as temperature or wind chill that is forecasted at or below freezing for ether night or day. The county experienced approximately 31 white flag events in the first three months of 2022, a release said. It is estimated that no more than 35 days a year during December through March will be declared as a white flag event, the release said. Questions regarding this Request for Information should be submitted to Delores Taylor, Community Development supervisor by email at dtaylor@cumberlandcountync.gov no later than 3 p.m. Nov. 15.
