The Marquis de Lafayette Chapter of the N.C. Society, Sons of the American Revolution, sponsored a commemoration of the 248th anniversary of the signing of the Liberty Point Resolves on June 24 on the banks of Cross Creek in downtown Fayetteville.
The commemoration was co-sponsored by the Liberty Point Resolves Chapter and the Col. Robert Rowan Chapter of the N.C. Society, Daughters of the American Revolution; the Isham Blake Chapter, N.C. Society, Children of the American Revolution; and the Lafayette Society, according to a news release.
Chris Thrasher of the Lafayette Society gave the keynote address. The ceremony included the reading of the names of the signers, a wreath-laying ceremony, and the reading of a proclamation from the office of the mayor declaring June 21 as Liberty Point Resolves Day.
The Liberty Point Resolves was an early Revolutionary War era document signed by settlers of Cumberland County that expressed dissatisfaction with the British monarchy and its agents in North Carolina. The document was signed in June 1775 by merchants of Cross Creek and others in Cumberland County.
The group is also referred to as the Cumberland Association.
