Commissioners hear updates on COVID-19, Crown Event Center, county fair

Posted

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners met Monday. Here’s a summary of what transpired.

COVID-19: Public Health Director Jennifer Green provided information about how levels of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — found through local wastewater testing are “creeping up” in the community. She urged residents to get the updated bivalent booster vaccine, available at no charge through her department.

Green also reminded commissioners that cases of respiratory illnesses such as COVID, the flu and RSV begin to rise in the fall. She expects the health department to have flu vaccines available by the end of September.

County Fair: The Cumberland County Fair is scheduled for Sept. 1-10 at the Crown Event Center. According to Agriculture Extension Director Lisa Childers, the theme of this year’s fair “Off to the Fair,” an homage to the classic children’s book “Charlotte's Web.” Childers says her department plans to purchase 1,400 copies of the book to distribute to students in anticipation of the fair.

Crown Event Center schematics: Mock-ups of the planned Crown Event Center downtown were shared by the firm respondible for the design. The center will include conference and event space and a 3,000-seat theater with a terrace. It will be located across from the historic Cumberland County Courthouse on Gillespie Street.

‘Project Wave’ economic development project: Commissioners heard about the possibility of a Chinese green energy manufacturer building a facility in Cumberland County that will bring 282 jobs over a five-year period. The county's Economic Development Corp. is working with officials to recruit the company.
