Cumberland County will open its second StoryWalk on Tuesday at Lake Rim Park, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Public Library,
The StoryWalk is a half mile long and presents each page of a picture book laminated and displayed along a walking trail so adults and children can read the book together. The walk is updated throughout the year, and families can read several stories. Picture book displays feature early literacy and science, technology, engineering, arts and bath activities along with movement exercises, the release said.
The grand opening begins at 10 a.m. at the park, 2214 Tar Kiln Drive. There will be games, balloon animals and more for people of all ages.
StoryWalk is a community project led by the Cumberland County Public Library in collaboration with Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation and funded by a state Library of North Carolina Bright Ideas grant. The literacy-focused attraction encourages children, caregivers and teachers to experience reading, participate in physical activity and explore nature together.
"We are so excited to bring a second StoryWalk to Cumberland County. This is another way to reach families in public parks and to foster a love of reading through movement and play,” said Heather Hall, interim library deputy director. “Cumberland County Public Library believes in finding fun, exciting ways to provide early literacy opportunities to the community, and we hope everyone enjoys these stories."
Visitors can experience StoryWalk at both Lake Rim Park and Clark Park daily during normal park hours. The StoryWalk at Clark Park, 631 Sherman Drive, opened in October 2020.
