Dorothy Jean ((Traylor)) Tigner

Posted

Dorothy Jean Tigner, 97, passed away peacefully in The Retreat Hospice in Mobile, Alabama on April 2, 2024.   Born in 1927 in Iuka, MS; Dorothy was the daughter of Joel and Stella Traylor.

Known to her friends as “Jean,” she spent the majority of her life in Fayetteville, NC after spending time with her husband in Germany where her three sons were born.

Jean always would sacrifice for her family and friends.  At 18 years old, after eloping, she fearlessly traveled by bus, train and ocean freighter all alone, to be with her new husband in post-war Germany.

They were married for 66 years until his death in 2012.

Most that knew her in Fayetteville would remember that their home was always the gathering place for friends and food.  Jean was a great southern cook and her sons were bringing friends home for dinner from the time they were young until they were grown.  There were always the regular guests that loved to stop by to visit.

Preceding her in death; husband Vernon Tigner and grandson Zachary Tigner. She is survived by a younger sister, Lola Soileau of Bartlett TN; three sons, Joel Tigner and wife Laurie of Rapid City, S.D., John Tigner and wife Kathy of New Bern, NC, and Bill Tigner and wife Carla of Foley, Ala.; grandchildren, Sita Wieland, Drew Holland Tigner, Chase Tigner, Matthew Tigner and Carr Tigner; and great-grandchildren, Stacia Dilfer, Sadie Dilfer, Aria Wieland, Wesley Wieland, Beckham Boyd and Owen Boyd.

She will be laid to rest alongside of her husband at the cemetery at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
