Each year, Cumberland County Schools names a graduating senior at each high school as a Standout Senior. The 17 2023 Standout Seniors are bright, hard-working students who have overcome the odds to graduate and dedicate themselves to serving their community.

LaCole Mahue will graduate from Douglas Byrd High School. She answered these questions about her education and her future.
I am most proud of my time in the JROTC program and being the first person in my family to graduate in a while.
After graduation, I plan to attend college.
ROTC is my favorite extracurricular activity.
My favorite self-statement is: “There is always tomorrow.” I stress a lot but sometimes I just have to remember that there is a tomorrow, and I can achieve my goal whenever.
I feel like Cumberland County Schools has prepared me well in the core subjects of English, math, science, and social studies. Even so, I would have preferred that as we got older the focus be placed more on life skills than on academic skills.
The staff member who has had a lasting impression on me is Miss Elam. She is always there when I need someone to talk to.
