Gray’s Creek student arrested after loaded weapon, drugs found in locker

Posted

A loaded gun was found in a student’s locker at Gray’s Creek High School on Tuesday, according to a post by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

The weapon was found after an anonymous complaint about a possible weapon on school grounds was made to school administrators.

A loaded Taurus 9mm handgun was discovered in a backpack inside the juvenile offender's locker during a search conducted by school administrators and a school resource officer.

Administration found additional ammunition and marijuana in the offender's car.

“As soon as this information was reported to school officials, they immediately acted and notified law enforcement to lead the investigation and respond appropriately,” Lindsay Whitley, associate superintendent of communications and community engagement, said in a statement.

The offender, whose name is not being released to the public because he is under the age of 18, is in the custody of the Cumberland County Department of Juvenile Justice as of Tuesday. He was charged with possession of a firearm on campus and possession of marijuana.

“Thanks to the quick actions of school officials and law enforcement, the situation was resolved without incident. The safety of all students and staff remains our top priority,” Whitley said in a statement.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office has asked anyone with information regarding this investigation to call youth services detective J. Washington at 910-677-5506 or CrimeStoppers at 910-483-TIPS (8477).
