Fayetteville’s water, sewer and electric company anticipates spending about $18.6 million to line 4,000 feet of a damaged 54-inch diameter sewer line and stabilize the terrain around it to protect it.
The reinforced concrete pipe is about 48 years old and runs along Rockfish Creek near Claude Lee Road and Exit 44 on Interstate 95, according to bid documentation on the PWC website.
Acidic hydrogen sulfide gas, which forms inside sewer systems, has damaged the pipe’s interior, the bid paperwork says. An engineering consultant recommended that an epoxy liner be installed to repair it.
Eroded and unstable soil around the pipe could also cause the pipe to fail, the bid paperwork says. “Failure of this outfall would result in significant construction, environmental and social cost,” it says.
The Fayetteville Public Works Commission is scheduled to vote at its 8:30 a.m. meeting on Wednesday whether to approve a $2.05 million bid for the first phase of the repair project to Goldsboro-based T.A. Loving Co. If the PWC approves the bid, it will be sent to the Fayetteville City Council for final approval, the meeting agenda says. The agenda says the $2.05 million is 11% of the project’s total estimated cost.
This project is part of a large, ongoing effort since 2006 to inspect and rehabilitate 89,000 feet of sewer lines that are 36 inches in diameter or larger, said PWC spokeswoman Carolyn Justice-Hinson. So far, 43,000 feet have been completed, she said.
