Fayetteville electricity customers can voice their opinion on Wednesday on the proposed power rate increase and other rate and fee changes being considered by the Public Works Commission.
The PWC will have a public hearing on its proposed new rates — a boost on average of 2% starting May 1 and another 2% boost next May. Prices for other things, such as the monthly cost of security lights, or connecting a newly built building to the PWC’s water and sewer system, also would increase.
The hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the PWC’s headquarters building, 955 Old Wilmington Road.
People who wish to address the commissioners during the hearing must register in advance, and will each be given three minutes to speak.
They may register in person at the PWC office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, or between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the PWC’s board room. People may also submit their name and address to pwcboard@faypwc.com, or they can fax this information to (910) 829-0207.

The PWC was taking written comments, but the period for written comments closed at 5 p.m. this past Friday.
The PWC said on its website that the utility has to increase its prices because of inflation and other expenses, and “the main driver in electric rates are power supply costs for buying power from our wholesale provider Duke Energy Progress.”
Electric rates were lowered 4.7% in 2020. “These changes will bring rates back to where they were before the 2020 decrease,” the PWC says on its webpage.
