SPRING LAKE — The Spring Lake Board of Aldermen is expected to discuss the renaming of Woodland West Park at when it meets Monday night.
The board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the Grady Howard conference room of Spring Lake Town Hall.
In February 2020, the board unanimously voted to rename Woodland West Park in honor of lifelong resident Rex Perry, who passed away on Oct. 25, 2019, at the age of 58 after a long illness.
Perry was known by many as a coach and mentor, working with children in the town recreation department and later in student activities at Fayetteville Technical Community College.
“Rex Perry was a positive pillar of the community,” said former Alderwoman Fredricka Sutherland, who supported naming the park for Perry. “He worked with kids in the recreation department coaching baseball and was always available to help Woodland West residents with their annual community outings. I am elated to see this come to fruition.”
Sutherland is president of the Woodland West Community Watch group.
COVID-19 shut down operations at Town Hall shortly after the vote on the park’s name was taken on Feb. 24, 2020. Since then, Spring Lake Parks and Recreation has become part of the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation department.
Also Monday, the board will hear a presentation on a potential cancer walk and community festival proposed for Sept. 30. The newly formed Special Event Advisory Committee endorsed plans for the festival on July 10. The Board of Aldermen must approve the festival because attendance is expected to be more than 200 people.
The organization Pink D.Y.M.O.N.S. is asking that the town co-sponsor the festival and waive fees to Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation and the town.
The festival will include food trucks, vendors and bounce houses. Admission and vendor fees would be charged.
The festival is already being advertised on the organization’s Facebook page as the seventh annual 5K cancer walk and community festival. Previously, it was held in South Carolina.
The board also is expected to go into closed session for matters of attorney-client privilege and personnel.
