Weathers is the wife of an Army chaplain and licensed counselor who has spent the past 20 years helping military spouses cope with deployments to developing meaningful marital relationships, according to a news release. Also in attendance will be Instant Teams and 12M+ co-founders and military spouses Liza Rodewald and Erica McMannes. It’s pancakes galore Friday and Saturday as the Kiwanis Club of Cape Fear is staging its 50th annual Pancake Breakfast at the Green Orthodox Church & Hellenic Center at 614 Oakridge Ave. in Fayetteville. The all-you-can-eat breakfast, according to club member Pitt Dickey, includes sausage and coffee. Hours are 7 a.m. to noon each day, and you can eat in or do take-out orders. Tickets are $8. Doyle Wood is nearing 60 years as a music icon in this community. A 2016 inductee into the Performing Arts Hall of Fame, Wood has worked alongside George Strait, Ronnie Milsap, Marie Osmond and the Allman Brothers. With his mellow voice and musical talent, Doyle Wood just keeping getting better with age.

“Thanks for recognizing the life and accomplishments of Coach ‘Lefty’ Driesell in a recent column,” Glenn Riddle, a former Atlantic Coast Conference basketball referee, writes in an email about last week's remembrance of the late Maryland and Davidson men’s basketball coach. “He was an excellent coach, outstanding recruiter and marketing genius. Many of us remember his pledge to make the University of Maryland ‘The UCLA of the East.’ Also, remember the epic N.C. State vs Maryland game. I officiated several games at Maryland. Always enjoyed interacting with Coach Driesell. Also, I had the pleasure of attending the ACC head coaches meeting while Coach Driesell was association president. Entertaining! The basketball world lost a Hall of Fame ambassador.” No question, Glenn, he coached great teams, was a competitive coach and one of the best to ever coach alongside the Tobacco Road sidelines. Charles “Lefty” Driesell died at age 92 on Feb. 17 at his Virginia Beach, Virginia home.

“I will miss Bryant Holmes,” the Rev. Ben West, retired senior pastor, reminded us on Feb. 24 at Westminster Presbyterian Church about the late and longtime church member. “I will miss his old reddish truck loaded with pine straw and that not quite greenish car with a fresh-made biscuit or two. Bryant’s DNA is all over this church, from the kitchen, the fellowship hall and this sanctuary.” West reminded us, too, that the stained-glass windows of the sanctuary are also marked by Holmes’ fingerprints and longtime dedication to the church along Village Drive. “I will miss Bryant Holmes, and I will continue to miss him in the life of this church.” Bryant Glenn Holmes was 93 when he died Jan. 23.

The Great French-American Yard Sale is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 9 at 121 Devane St. in Haymount. “We are joining forces this year with the Heritage Square Historical Society,” says Kris Johnson, president of the Fayetteville-Saint-Avold Friendship Alliance, an independent organization that manages the Sister City program for Fayetteville. “This is our biggest of two fundraisers we do each year, and it has earned a great reputation as being one not to miss. We have good stuff.” The rain date is 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 16.
