Verda Lee ((O'Banion)) Hughes

Verda Lee O'Banion Hughes was born in Beaver Creek, Louisiana on July 9, 1933.  She was the seventh of ten children of Ada Blanche O'Banion and William Grover O'Banion. Of all the names Verda was known by over the years, her favorite was the nickname given to her by her daddy, “bug.”  During her life, she was a devoted wife and mother and a steadfast servant of the Lord. She is preceded in death by her parents, eight of her siblings, and her granddaughter, Jennifer Hughes Bryant. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Ray Curtis Hughes, Sr. of Fayetteville, NC; her brother, George Clark O'Banion of Linder, LA; her four children: Debbie Hughes Barker and husband, William James Barker, Jr. of Fayetteville, NC, Ray Curtis Hughes, Jr. and wife, Marie Huffman Hughes of Oak Island, NC, William Thomas Hughes and wife, Melissa P. Hughes of Four Oaks, NC, Laura Lee Hughes Kania and husband, Cris Andrew Kania of Morganton, NC, nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.  The family will receive friends on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 9:45 to 10:45 am. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel at 11 am with Reverend Michael Stewart officiating. Burial to follow the service at Fayetteville Memorial Cemetery.
