The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners met Thursday to discuss the agenda for its meeting Monday and approve its consent agenda.
Meeting highlights include:
American Rescue Plan funding approval
The board unanimously approved funding for Phase II of its American Rescue Plan Small Business Economic Assistance Program. The program uses federal funds to provide as much as $50,000 in financial assistance for small, for-profit businesses that faced economic hardship related to the COVID pandemic.
The full plan is set to be approved as part of the board’s consent agenda on Monday.
Homeless shelter architect
Commissioners voted unanimously to put consideration of an agreement with LS3P architects for a homeless support center on Monday’s agenda.
The county Board of Education recently approved the transfer of two parcels of excess land at 225 B St. to the county as a site for the homeless support center. The county has not confirmed whether the land will be used for the shelter.
Renewal of Animal Services contract for Fort Liberty
The renewal of a contract between the Animal Services department and Fort Liberty was added to the consent agenda by a unanimous vote. The renewal includes increased prices for services such as animal removal.
Mandatory drug testing for county transit operators
The board approved consideration of a requirement for oral fluid or urine drug testing for all drivers working in Cumberland County.
PFAS cleanup
Commissioners approved a plan to hire HDR engineering to assess and provide schools with well water in the Gray’s Creek area. Commissioner Toni Stewart voted against the proposal.
Chambers of commerce
The board decided to table a discussion on whether to join the Greater Sandhills Chamber of Commerce and the Hope Mills Chamber of Commerce, questioning the cost and benefits of membership. The board asked county staff to provide information and costs for all organizations to which it belongs.
The agenda meeting ended with a closed session.
Commissioners will meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Cumberland County Courthouse.
