Family fun day: There be pirates at Cliffdale Regional Library

Posted

Yo-ho-ho! There be pirates coming to Cliffdale Regional Library from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 18.

There’s no need to sail into the briny deep looking for adventure because there’s something here for landlubbers and pirates of all ages. Costumes are welcome and encouraged, but ye won’t have to walk the plank if ye don’t have one.

Set sail for Cliffdale Regional, located at 6882 Cliffdale Road, and enjoy pirate-themed fun and games. Stick around to hear one of North Carolina’s very own award-winning authors and historians.

The youngest buccaneers can find their pirate name and design a nametag, pirate flag and hat. They can search for treasure, make a treasure map, pin an eyepatch on a pirate and enjoy a room filled with games and activities.

Seasoned pirates, or younger ones with an adult’s assistance, can create a pirate flag or pirate ship using Perler beads and design a bandana to impress the other pirates with their sense of style.

Sea rovers of all ages can work alone or in teams to test their knowledge of pirates with our Pirate Trivia. They can also compete in a pirate costume relay race and a librarywide scavenger hunt.

At 3 p.m., we will pack up the games and booty and welcome author and historian Robin Reams.

Reams, a North Carolina native, is the author of “Unlocking Blackbeard’s Skeletons,” “Aboard Blackbeard’s Queen” and “Shadow of the Mountain.” Reams will be talking about Blackbeard’s life, family crew and his connections to North Carolina. She will have books available for purchase.

Reams typically dresses in pirate attire when she speaks, so please feel free to join the fun.

If your timbers are shivering from excitement and you want to know more about pirates, check out some of the books on pirates that Cumberland County Public Library has available:

  • “Pirates!: Brigands, Buccaneers, and Privateers in Fact, Fiction, and Legend” by Jan Rogozi

  • “Pirates” by Andrew Langley
  • “Pirates Ahoy” by Hilary McKay
