CUMBERLAND COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Commissioners to discuss Medicaid expansion support, landfill changes at agenda session

Posted

Cumberland County Commissioners will meet Thursday afternoon to discuss items to add to the board’s agenda for future meetings. Here’s what they'll address:

Medicaid expansion assistance

Cumberland County employees are seeking to add a temporary call and registration center to deal with an anticipated increase in the number of applicants for Medicaid.

North Carolina’s Medicaid expansion goes into effect on Dec. 1, and an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 additional Cumberland County residents will be eligible for the expansion.

The infrastructure needs of the call and registration center are set to cost $344,633. Commissioners are looking to utilize leftover Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and American Rescue Plan Act Revenue Replacement funds to cover remaining costs.

Landfill changes

By the year 2030, Ann Street Landfill — now serving the city of Fayetteville and the county — will run out of capacity. County staff are requesting commissioners approve the first phase of a contract to build a new waste transfer station. The contract is set with the TA Loving Company.

Commissioners are also considering adding to the agenda the approval of an investigation and remedial action plan by the N.C Dept. of Environmental Quality to monitor the former Cliffdale landfill for potential contaminants. NCDEQ will also handle the cleanup of any contaminants found at the site.

Reports and updates

Commissioners will hear a report from Jennifer Green, the Cumberland County director of public health, about public health budget initiatives.

A financial report for the current fiscal year will also be given at the Thursday agenda session, along with an update on the county’s retiree health care plan.

Lastly, commissioners will hear an update about ongoing construction projects happening across the county, such as bathroom updates to the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Courthouse, Department of Social Services elevators and recovery shelter generators.
