Park spaces in Hope Mills will now be more accessible to disabled visitors with the opening of a playground at Municipal Park. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Reid’s Journey Inclusive Playground was held Sept. 8 at the park, 5766 Rockfish Road, according to a news release.
The park features rubberized surfacing and accessible walks that make the entrance to the playground area compliant with the Americans With Disablilities Act. More than 70% of the playground amenities are ADA-accessible through ramping and transition decks, the release said.
Reid's Journey began with $18,514 in seed money and was one of three projects funded through the Hope Mills Giving Together Community Challenge, which partnered with the Cumberland County Foundation matching grant program, the release said. The project, primarily funded by $340,000 in state infrastructure funding, was approved by the Hope Mills Board of Commissioners in 2020.
Hope Mills Municipal Park has 1.8 miles of walking trails, six lighted athletic fields, a veterans memorial, skatepark, dog park, a newly updated basketball court, tennis courts, two picnic shelters, charcoal grills, restrooms, a splashpad nearing completion, and the new playground, the release said.
