A Fayetteville man crashed his vehicle following a brief chase Monday night involving Cumberland County deputies and the state Highway Patrol.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies found guns and drugs in the crashed vehicle.

Around 8:50 p.m., deputies attempted to stop a driver on Owen Drive near Gillespie Street. The driver could not stay in his travel lane, drove into the median several times, and drove the wrong way at oncoming traffic while refusing to stop, the Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The Highway Patrol assisted with the chase, which ended when the driver crashed a Cadillac Deville in front of the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Owen Drive, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver was taken into custody. Deputies found an assault rifle, a handgun and drugs in the car, the release said.

The Sheriff’s Office said William Scott Martin, 35, was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, trafficking methamphetamine, maintaining a vehicle, possession with intent to sell or deliver a controlled substance, fleeing to elude arrest and assault on a female.

Martin also received several traffic citations, including driving while license revoked, failure to maintain lane, fictitious registration, careless and reckless, failure to stop at a stoplight, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

He is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $285,000 secure bond.
