NCSU study finds elevated levels of PFAS in pet dogs, horses near Chemours

Six years after it was first revealed that Chemours and its predecessor, Dupont, had been dumping dangerous chemicals into the Cape Fear River for decades, a new study by North Carolina State University scientists has found elevated levels of PFAS in the blood of pet dogs and horses within a few miles of the factory.

Charles Evans, a former member of the Fayetteville City Council and Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, said in a news release Tuesday evening that he will file on Friday as a candidate for mayor in the upcoming municipal elections.

Alderman precinct split three ways after Board of Elections members sworn in

Members of the Cumberland County Board of Elections were sworn in for their two-year terms at a meeting Tuesday. The board later approved splitting the Alderman precinct into three separate precincts.

Animal Services shelter at capacity; adoption fees waived through Tuesday

The Cumberland County Animal Services shelter is waiving cat and dog adoption fees through Tuesday because the shelter is currently at capacity. Cats, kittens and any dogs older than 6 months and weighing 30 pounds or more are all free to adopt.

Dead periods have been a part of the summer break in the N.C. High School Athletic Association for at least 10 years, according to organization officials. The idea was to give both coaches and athletes a pause during their summer workout season while still allowing coaches to work with their own players in the offseason.

Filing for municipal elections begins at noon Friday

Candidates can file for all municipal elections starting at noon Friday and through noon July 21, according to the Cumberland County Board of Elections.  The city of Fayetteville primary election is Oct. 10, and the general election for all municipalities is Nov. 7.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a flash flood warning for northwestern Cumberland County until 5:45 p.m. today. Just after 4 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area, according to the Weather Service’s website.

Historically, Cumberland County schools are named for former superintendents who are remembered for their distinguished education careers. No school will be named for Bill Harrison, the superintendent from 1997 to 2009, and Harrison will tell you that’s perfectly fine with him.
