The wait is finally over. The 2023 high school football season has arrived with a full schedule of games tonight. Here’s a preview of the 10 Cumberland County senior high school football teams. Best wishes to all the players and coaches for an outstanding season.

Once again, I risk the wrath of fans and coaches as I make a fool of myself trying to forecast the outcome of weekly high school football games. For the record, don’t read anything into this beyond a guy who loves high school football trying to make an informed choice about who will win on Friday nights.

Cumberland County tax bills were mailed to property owners on Aug. 11, according to a county news release. The deadline to pay 2023 property taxes is Jan. 5. After that, a 2% interest charge will be assessed the first month and a 0.75% interest charge each month thereafter, beginning Feb. 1, the news release said.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify suspects in the theft of a food truck on Cumberland Road. The truck was stolen about 10 p.m. July 22 from Tropical Caribbean Cuisine, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite the fact that the public health emergency has ended and life has more or less gone back to normal for most people, COVID-19 is still around. And cases are on the rise across Cumberland County.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a heat advisory for three days beginning Saturday. Heat index values will be over 100 degrees on Saturday through Tuesday, according to a Cumberland County news release.

Scrimmages light up Friday night in preview of prep football season

The official dress rehearsal for the Cumberland County Schools high school football season takes place Friday night with separate evenings of preseason scrimmages involving all 10 schools and several outside schools invited to fill out the schedule.

Commissioners reveal 2024 budget information as regular meetings resume

After a break from meetings in the month of July, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Monday discussed the 2024 fiscal year budget, made some appointments, and presented a national achievement award.

With its animal shelter currently at capacity, Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees through Aug. 31, according to a county news release. Animal Services is participating in the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign this month.

Five of seven Cumberland County commissioners take advantage of health insurance provided by the county. They are, according to a county spokesman, Toni Stewart, the commission chairwoman; Glenn Adams, the commission vice chairman; and Commissioners Marshall Faircloth, Jimmy Keefe and Michael Boose. Elections board recruiting poll workers to deal with shortage of staffing

With municipal elections this fall and the presidential and state elections coming in 2024, Cumberland County is dealing with a shortage of poll workers — 1,200 of them, according to Elections Director Angie Amaro. “We generally have a shortage, but not this bad,” Amaro said of the current situation.

ELIZABETHTOWN — Fayetteville Technical Community College and Bladen Community College have partnered to increase truck-driver training in the region. The colleges made the agreement made the agreement official Wednesday in a signing ceremony at BCC. The arrangement allows students enrolled at either school to use FTCC’s truck-driving instruction facility.

Parents warned of lead found at Beaver Dam Elementary School

Parents of children who attend Beaver Dam Elementary School have been warned about high levels of lead in the water there. Chipped paint at the school prompted the Cumberland County Department of Public Health to test for lead in the water of the school in the southeastern part of the county.

The field is set. Filing for upcoming municipal elections ended at noon Friday, with Charles Evans making his bid for mayor official and four more candidates signing up to run for a seat on the Fayetteville City Council.

Candidates have until noon today to file for municipal offices in Cumberland County, according to the Board of Elections. As the filing period neared its end Thursday, two more challengers emerged for the District 2 Fayetteville City Council seat; the Hope Mills commissioners race gained two hopefuls; and a challenger filed to become mayor of Spring Lake.
