Pine Forest women’s golf standout balances volleyball, classroom achievements

Pine Forest women’s golf coach David May said he was talking to a cohort recently when the subject of Trojan senior golfer Jordan Blanton came up. “Jordan is playing with a different mantra,” May said. “She’s calm and collected. Her whole game is changing.” After a string of scores in the 80s, Blanton peaked earlier this week in the All American Conference tournament at Chicora Golf Club in Dunn, turning in a personal best of 77.

A South View football standout and a Cape Fear golfer are the Athletes of the Week in Cumberland County Schools.

Cumberland schools well represented on East’s All-Star football squad

There will be a strong Cumberland County presence at the first East-West All-Star football game played in December this year. Two Fayetteville coaches are on the East staff for the game. Pine Forest’s Bill Sochovka will be head coach for the East while Terry Sanford assistant coach Jeff Morehead will be an assistant. Players from Cumberland County chosen for the game include kicker Juan Hernandez of Pine Forest, wide receiver Rico McDonald and linebacker Landon Sargent of Cape Fear, and defensive back Kamal Thames of Terry Sanford.

Fayetteville Academy looks to prove itself in soccer playoffs

A funny thing happened to Fayetteville Academy after completing its soccer regular season with a perfect 16-0 record. When seedings were announced for this year’s state 2-A playoffs, the Eagles found themselves sitting at No. 6. The lower seeding did earn them a double bye, meaning they won’t play their first game until Saturday, but both Eagle head coach Andrew McCarthy and some of his players were a little mystified that they didn’t get more of a reward for their unbeaten record.

A loaded gun was found in a student’s locker at Gray’s Creek High School on Tuesday, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Animal shelter, county seek funding to pay for seized horses’ care

It’s been nearly two months since Cumberland County Animal Services removed seven horses — two adults and five juveniles — from Witts End Quarter Horses, resulting in arrests and charges of animal abuse.

A human operator retained the final authority over whether to ultimately destroy any one target.

Business Notebook: Grant to fund free smoke, carbon monoxide alarms

Cumberland County Emergency Services received a check for $4,912 from South River Electric Membership Corp. for the purchase of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms to be distributed to volunteer fire departments.

Family support credited as Gray’s Creek baseball field named in honor of coach

Jeff Nance has an athletic family tree that would be the envy of almost anyone. His eldest brother, Terry Luck, was a multisport star at old Massey Hill High School who came off the bench in 1974 and led Nebraska with a game-winning drive over Florida in the Sugar Bowl. His brother Ronnie Luck was also a Massey Hill star who went on to a college career at UNC-Pembroke and served as both coach and athletic director in a number of Cumberland County schools. But this week, Nance scored an achievement that pushed him past both his older brothers in the accomplishment category as the Cumberland County Board of Education voted to name the baseball field at Gray’s Creek High School in his honor.
